TLDR VDUP1 is found in skin and hair follicles, interacts with sciellin, and may help regulate skin cell differentiation.
In the 2003 study, researchers found that Vitamin D-Upregulated Protein 1 (VDUP1) is expressed in the basal layer of normal human epidermis and the inner and outer root sheaths of hair follicles, but not in the matrix. It was also found in all layers of psoriatic epidermis. The study demonstrated that VDUP1 interacts with sciellin, a precursor of the cornified envelope, in cultured keratinocytes. This interaction was shown using immunological techniques such as immunohistochemistry, indirect immunofluorescence, western blots, and confocal microscopy. The expression of both VDUP1 and sciellin was higher in differentiating keratinocytes, and they colocalized in certain parts of the hair follicle and psoriatic epidermis. These findings suggest that VDUP1 may have a regulatory role in the differentiation of keratinocytes, which could have implications for understanding skin diseases like psoriasis.
