The AKT signaling pathway, also known as the Protein Kinase B (PKB) pathway, is a crucial cell signaling system that regulates various cellular processes, including growth, survival, and metabolism. It is activated by growth factors and other extracellular signals, leading to the phosphorylation and activation of AKT, which then influences numerous downstream targets to promote cell proliferation and inhibit apoptosis (cell death). This pathway is significant in many physiological contexts and is often implicated in cancer and other diseases due to its role in cell survival and growth.
