TLDR Injecting platelet-rich plasma into the scalp stimulates hair growth, increases hair density, and treats hair loss effectively with minimal side effects.
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP), a high concentration of blood platelets in a small volume of plasma, has been proven effective in treating hair loss and thinning. When injected into the scalp, PRP releases growth factors that stimulate hair growth. Studies, such as those by Greco and Brandt, and Singh, have shown increased hair density and effective treatment of chronic alopecia areata with minimal side effects. PRP therapy has been found to be more effective than minoxidil, a common hair loss drug. PRP works by extending the anagen phase of the hair cycle, increasing cell survival, and promoting stem cell differentiation into hair follicle cells. Studies by Tawfik and Osman, and Gkini et al, involving a total of 50 patients, showed significant improvements in hair density, thickness, and quality. Treatment typically involves at least three sessions, each one month apart, with a booster session after one year.
