TLDR Upadacitinib may effectively treat both alopecia universalis and Crohn's disease.
This case report described a 23-year-old man with Crohn's disease who developed alopecia universalis while on adalimumab. After 7 months of treatment with upadacitinib, an oral JAK1 inhibitor, he experienced near-complete resolution of his alopecia universalis. He was also on ustekinumab for Crohn's disease for 16 months before starting upadacitinib. The report suggested that upadacitinib might be an effective treatment for patients with both alopecia areata and Crohn's disease, highlighting the potential shared pathogenic mechanism involving the Janus kinase/STAT pathway.
