TLDR The origins of many adult skin stem cells are still mostly unknown.
This review explored the embryonic development and characteristics of various stem cell populations in the skin, focusing on their emergence, structure, and markers. It highlighted the skin's role as a reservoir for adult stem cells originating from different embryonic sources, residing in areas such as the hair follicle, sebaceous gland, dermis, and epidermis. Despite the known presence of these stem cells, the review noted that the embryonic origins of many stem cell populations in the adult epidermis and other skin layers remained largely unknown at the time.
