TLDR Smoking increases the risk of male pattern hair loss.
The meta-analysis, which synthesized data from eight observational studies, found a significant association between smoking and male pattern hair loss (AGA). Men who have ever smoked are 1.8 times more likely to develop AGA compared to non-smokers. Those who smoke at least 10 cigarettes per day are twice as likely to develop AGA than those who smoke fewer. The chances of AGA worsening are 1.3 times higher in smokers. However, the study found no significant link between the intensity of smoking and the severity of AGA. The study suggests that AGA patients should be informed about the negative effects of smoking.
