TLDR Higher sebum levels are linked to more severe male baldness.
This observational analytic study with a cross-sectional method involved 50 male patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and aimed to determine the correlation between sebum level and the severity of AGA. The severity was classified using the Hamilton-Norwood scale I–VII, and sebum levels were measured with a Sebumeter® SM 815. The study found that the majority of patients were in the 36–45 age group, had higher education, worked in business services or as salespeople, had a family history of AGA, and had been suffering from AGA for over 20 years. Most patients were at a Hamilton-Norwood stage III and had normal sebum levels. The results showed a very strong positive correlation (r=0.94) between sebum level and AGA severity, with a significance level of p<0.01, indicating that higher sebum levels are associated with more severe AGA.
