TLDR Red pigmented rice, like Sang-Yod rice, could help promote hair growth and prevent hair loss.
The study "Health Benefits and Safety of Red Pigmented Rice (Oryza sativa L.): In Vitro, Cellular, and In Vivo Activities for Hair Growth Promoting Treatment" found that Thai native red and black pigmented rice extracts, particularly Sang-Yod (SY) and Mun-Poo (MP), have hair growth-promoting properties. The extracts showed in vitro 5α-reductase inhibition, which can help prevent androgenic alopecia by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that contributes to hair loss. The extracts also increased the proliferation of human hair matrix cells and promoted extensive hair growth in C3H mice without causing skin irritation. The study concludes that red pigmented rice, especially Sang-Yod rice, could be a potential natural source for hair growth-promoting products.
