TLDR Using platelet-rich plasma in hair restoration surgery significantly improves hair density after 6 months and is safe to use.
This pilot study involved 20 cases of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and examined the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as an intraoperative holding solution in hair restoration surgery. The results showed that the PRP group had a faster recovery from 'shock effluvium' and a significantly higher hair density at 6 months (P < 0.05). The final hair density in the PRP group was 31.0 (±4.9 SD), compared to 25.5 (±2.5 SD) in the non-PRP group. The study concluded that PRP significantly improves the outcome in hair restoration surgery by improving the mean density of the implanted follicular unit grafts at 6 months and is safe for use in hair restoration surgery.
