TLDR Pulse corticosteroid therapy helps many with severe alopecia areata regrow hair, but has side effects.
This article reviews 20 studies involving 2144 patients to update knowledge on hair regrowth rates after pulse corticosteroid therapy (PCT) for severe alopecia areata. The findings indicate that 31.02% of patients did not respond to PCT, while 48.16% achieved more than 50% hair regrowth or a significant reduction in the Severity of Alopecia Areata Tool Score. Complete hair regrowth was observed in 38.53% of patients. Despite its effectiveness, PCT is associated with many unwanted side effects. The article includes a retrospective study from University Hospital Bonn, Germany, conducted in 2022, contributing to the overall analysis.
