TLDR The improved nanoparticles can effectively target hair follicles for drug delivery.
The study aimed to enhance the preparation of Poly (D,L-lactide) (PLA) nanoparticles for targeted drug delivery to hair follicles. Researchers used a nanoprecipitation method to create a monodispersed population of non-cytotoxic spherical nanoparticles approximately 150 nm in size, achieving a 90% yield. The nanoparticles effectively encapsulated and released both lipophilic and hydrophilic compounds, with entrapment efficiencies above 80%. Ex vivo skin penetration studies confirmed the presence of nanoparticles throughout the follicular ducts. The optimized method demonstrated potential for industrial-scale production of PLA nanoparticle-based formulations for hair follicle targeting, offering a promising approach for treating hair follicle-related disorders.
