TLDR Platycarya strobilacea extract is a strong antioxidant that can grow hair better than minoxidil.
The study from 2014 examined the effects of Platycarya strobilacea S. et Z. extract (PSE) on hair growth in 15 male C57BL/6 mice over a 21-day period, comparing it to minoxidil and a negative control. PSE demonstrated high antioxidant activity, with no toxicity, and was found to promote hair growth more effectively than minoxidil. This was evidenced by increased hair follicle length, enhanced stem cell factor (SCF) expression, a reduction in mast cell numbers, and a favorable modulation of cytokines, with increased levels of IGF-1 and KGF and decreased levels of TGF-ß1. These results suggest that PSE could be a potent agent for treating alopecia, although further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms.
