TLDR STAR particles can improve the effectiveness of topical hair growth treatments without causing skin irritation.
The study investigated the use of STAR particles, which are millimeter-sized ceramic particles with microneedles, to enhance the topical delivery of hair growth-modulating drugs by creating micropores in the skin. The STAR particles increased skin permeability to minoxidil and acyclovir by more than three-fold in pig skin ex vivo. In vivo studies in rats showed that STAR particles improved the efficacy of these drugs, resulting in significant modulation of hair growth without causing skin irritation or adverse effects. This suggests that STAR particles could be a promising method for enhancing the topical delivery of hair growth treatments.
