TLDR Minoxidil effectively treats hair loss, works better for women, and requires consistent use.
This document from 30 years ago compiles various studies and research on the use of minoxidil for hair growth and alopecia treatment. The studies suggest that minoxidil can be an effective treatment for hair loss, but further research is needed to fully understand its mechanisms of action and potential side effects. Minoxidil appears to be more effective in women than in men, increasing the number of hairs and hair shaft diameter, which is more useful in a woman's long hair. Compliance is key for effectiveness in both men and women, but minoxidil appears to be more effective in women than in men.
