TLDR Common hair loss in men can be treated with minoxidil or finasteride.
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of hair loss in both men and women, affecting about 50% of men by age 50 and up to 70% in later life. Effective treatments include 5% topical minoxidil and 1 mg oral finasteride, with minoxidil promoting hair growth by extending the anagen phase and enlarging suboptimal follicles. Oral finasteride is particularly reliable for men aged 18 to 40. Additionally, fibrosing alopecia in a pattern distribution involves progressive scarring alopecia.
