TLDR Minoxidil can cause unwanted hair growth, so personalized care and support are important.
This review explores the side effect of hypertrichosis, or excessive hair growth, from low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) used for alopecia, affecting 15.1% of patients. It highlights the psychosocial impact, such as distress and reduced self-esteem, and emphasizes a multidisciplinary management approach. Strategies include temporary and permanent hair removal techniques, medical management with antiandrogens, hormonal therapies, and enzyme inhibitors, and switching from oral to topical minoxidil to reduce side effects. Patient counseling and individualized treatment plans are crucial for improving quality of life, with regular monitoring for optimal outcomes.
