TLDR MicroRNAs could improve skin tissue engineering by regulating cells and changing the skin's bioactive environment.
The document reviewed the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in skin tissue engineering, highlighting their potential to address the limitations of current bioengineered skin equivalents (BSEs). Traditional BSEs face challenges such as slow generation of autologous BSEs, poor survival of allogeneic BSEs, and physical limitations. miRNAs, small noncoding RNA segments, can regulate gene expression and cellular behavior, offering a sophisticated and customizable approach to enhance skin tissue engineering. The review discussed the anatomy and repair processes of skin, the role of miRNAs in skin development and wound healing, and future directions for integrating miRNAs into skin tissue engineering to create more effective and functional BSEs.
