TLDR Combining microneedling with either vitamin D3 or bimatoprost improves hair regrowth more than microneedling alone.
This randomized trial compared the effectiveness of microneedling (MN) alone versus MN combined with either topical vitamin D3 or bimatoprost in treating alopecia areata (AA) in 75 patients. Results showed that both combination treatments significantly improved hair regrowth compared to MN alone, with bimatoprost showing a higher initial response. Specifically, 44% and 64% of patients in the vitamin D3 and bimatoprost groups, respectively, achieved ≥75% hair regrowth, compared to 12% in the MN group. Dermoscopic signs of AA activity decreased significantly in both combination treatment groups. No significant side effects were observed, and the study concluded that both treatments are safe and effective, though bimatoprost's higher cost may limit its use.
