TLDR Baldness is often stigmatized, causing distress for many men, but some accept it with minimal distress.
A mixed-methods international survey of 357 balding men revealed that baldness is often structurally stigmatized, with 68% of participants perceiving it as a humiliating image. About half of the participants internalized this stigma, with 44% agreeing it was disadvantageous and 39-45% experiencing distress. Many attempted to combat baldness through treatments (57%). Conversely, a portion of participants resisted the stigma, reporting minimal distress and accepting baldness (33-61%). The study suggests the need for psychosocial and evidence-based support to help men resist baldness stigmatization.
