TLDR PCOS causes inflammation regardless of body weight.
This study investigated inflammatory parameters in 44 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared to 45 healthy controls, focusing on body mass index (BMI). It found that women with PCOS had elevated levels of cytokines such as IL-1 RA, IL-2, IL-6, and MIP-1α, regardless of BMI. Lean women with PCOS showed higher levels of additional cytokines compared to controls. Insulin resistance (IR) was present in 20 PCOS participants, with higher levels of IL-1 RA and IL-6 in those with IR. The study suggests that chronic low-grade inflammation is an independent factor in PCOS development, not solely linked to obesity, and highlights the complex relationship between inflammation, IR, and PCOS.

High sugar diets may worsen hair loss by increasing 5α-reductase activity and androgen levels, especially in women with PCOS. A low sugar diet might reduce scalp DHT levels, similar to finasteride, but genetics also significantly influence hair loss.

A 29-year-old woman is experiencing gradual hair thinning since age 15, suspects Androgenic Alopecia, and has tried 5% minoxidil with little success. She has purchased various hair loss treatments including minoxidil, dutasteride, finasteride, and spironolactone, but is cautious about starting them due to potential interactions with her ADHD medication.
