October 2023 in “Biomedicines” This study investigated chronic inflammation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) compared to healthy controls, focusing on the impact of body mass index (BMI). It included 44 women with PCOS and 45 without, divided into normal weight and overweight groups. The results showed that several cytokines, including IL-1 RA, IL-2, IL-6, IL-17 E, IL-17 A, IL-18, and MIP-1 α, were elevated in women with PCOS regardless of BMI. Notably, lean women with PCOS exhibited higher levels of additional cytokines such as IL-1 alpha, IL-4, IL-9, and others compared to controls. The study concluded that chronic low-grade inflammation is an independent factor in PCOS, not linked to obesity, and highlighted novel findings of increased IL-9, MCP-3, and MIP-1α in PCOS patients.
