Studysummary This study suggests that women with idiopathic hirsutism have increased 5α-reductase activity, indicated by elevated levels of 3α-diol glucuronide; further research is needed to assess its clinical biomarker potential. Our plain-language summary of this paper — not a Tressless recommendation.
The study investigated the potential causes of idiopathic hirsutism (IH) and found that while polymorphisms of the androgen receptor (AR) and indirect markers were nonspecific, the dihydrotestosterone-reduced metabolite 5α-androstane-3α,17β-diol glucuronide was significantly elevated in women with IH. This suggested increased 5α-reductase activity in these women. The study concluded that further research was needed to assess the clinical utility of 3α-diol G as a biomarker for IH.
