TLDR Women with hirsutism have different levels of omentin-1, which may be linked to the condition and its genetic aspects.
The study involved 85 females, divided into three groups: 30 with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), 30 with idiopathic hirsutism, and 25 healthy controls, to evaluate serum levels of omentin-1 in females with hirsutism. It was found that serum testosterone levels were significantly higher in the PCOS group compared to the others, while females with idiopathic hirsutism had significantly higher serum omentin-1 levels than both the control and PCOS groups. There was a significant inverse correlation between serum testosterone and omentin-1 levels. The study concluded that omentin-1 might be involved in the pathogenesis of hirsutism and suggested an inverse relationship between testosterone and omentin-1 levels in hirsute females, indicating that hirsutism may also have a genetic component.
