TLDR Hirsutism is too much hair growth in women like the pattern in men, often caused by high male hormones, and can be treated with hormone control and hair removal methods.
Hirsutism, characterized by excessive terminal hair growth in women in a male pattern, can lead to significant psychological distress if not treated. The condition is primarily caused by high levels of androgens, with polycystic ovary syndrome being the most common cause. A serum testosterone level above 5 nmol/l indicates the need for further testing to rule out adrenal disorders or androgen-secreting tumors. The most effective treatment approach combines androgen suppression, peripheral androgen blockade, and methods for the removal or reduction of unwanted hair.
