TLDR Hyperandrogenism increases heart disease risk in premenopausal women, but this risk is linked to obesity in postmenopausal women.
Hyperandrogenism in premenopausal women is linked to higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors and increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality, independent of body mass index. In postmenopausal women, these risks are dependent on obesity, with overall cardiovascular disease risk similar to controls. The reduced cardiometabolic risk after menopause in hyperandrogenic women compared to nonhyperandrogenic women is not well understood, possibly due to changes in endocrine balance and metabolic status. The quality of existing data is low, and more extensive research is needed.
