TLDR KRTAP10 proteins help form the hair shaft's tough outer layer by interacting with specific hair keratins.
This study characterized the human hair shaft cuticle-specific keratin-associated protein 10 (KRTAP10) family, identifying 12 functional genes on chromosome 21q22.3. These proteins were mainly expressed in the upper keratinizing zone of the hair shaft cuticle and coexpressed with keratin 85 (K85). KRTAP10-1 protein was found to self-interact and bind to hair keratins K85, K32, and K82, but not to epithelial keratin K10, with the interaction with K82 mediated through its head domain. The findings suggested that KRTAP10 proteins played a crucial role in forming the rigid structure of the hair shaft cuticle through interactions with hair keratins.
