TLDR Thuja orientalis extract significantly promotes hair growth in mice with hair loss.
The study conducted 20 years ago investigated the effects of Thuja orientalis extract (TOS) on hair growth in hair loss-induced DBA1J mice. The extract was found to have no cytotoxic effect on non-stimulated cells, but it significantly reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), IL-6, tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and nitric oxide (NO) in stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Furthermore, when TOS (500 μg/ml) was applied to DBA 1J/mice, it remarkably promoted hair growth. The data suggested that TOS promotes hair growth in hair loss induced model mice, indicating the potential anti-hair loss activity of Thuja orientalis.
