Genome-Wide Associations With Body and Fleece Weight in United States Sheep

    This study conducted genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on 1,125 ewes from four U.S. sheep breeds to explore genetic associations with fleece weight and post-lambing ewe weight. It identified 24 significant SNPs on chromosomes 2, 3, 6, and 10, linked to genes such as ADAR, KCNN3, and TNFSF12, which are associated with wool production and quality. The research found breed differences, with Rambouillet ewes having the highest lifetime fleece weight. The findings enhance understanding of genetic mechanisms influencing wool traits, offering potential economic benefits for sheep producers by improving selection strategies for increased fleece weight.
