TLDR Researchers found genes and genetic variants linked to sheep wool and skin wrinkles.
The study conducted a conditional multi-trait sequence genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 7,218 Merino sheep to identify pleiotropic candidate genes and variants affecting wool traits, skin wrinkle, and breech cover. Researchers identified 178 independent quantitative trait loci (QTL) for 16 traits, with significant clusters on chromosomes OAR3, 6, 13, 19, and 25. Notable genes included THNSL2, MAT1A, EGFR, RALY, and LCORL, which were associated with various wool traits. The study highlighted the complex genetic architecture influencing these traits and provided valuable insights for improving wool quality and animal welfare in sheep breeding programs.
