TLDR Genetic variations affect dutasteride treatment response for male pattern hair loss.
This study aimed to identify genetic variations associated with response to dutasteride treatment for male pattern hair loss (MPHL). The study included 42 male subjects who received dutasteride for 6 months. The researchers performed genetic analysis and found several candidate regions associated with response to dutasteride. The most significant exonic variant was rs72623193 located in DHRS9, which is involved in the synthesis of DHT from 3α-androstanediol. Additionally, DHRS9 possesses retinol dehydrogenase (RolDH) activity, which converts retinol to retinal in retinoid acid (RA) synthesis. The study suggests that genetic variations may play a role in the response to dutasteride treatment in male subjects with androgenetic alopecia.
