TLDR Eyelashes protect the eyes, but more research is needed to understand how.
The review highlighted the protective role of eyelashes and the need for further research to understand the mechanisms behind this function. It covered the biology of eyelashes and their follicles, the pathophysiology and management of lash anomalies, and the impact of external factors like medications and cosmetics. Techniques such as lash imaging and follicle immunohistochemistry were used to document eyelash characteristics. Aerodynamic studies confirmed that optimal lash length helps reduce particle entry into the eye. Despite advances, research on eyelashes remained limited due to sampling challenges, emphasizing the need for more studies to bridge the gap with scalp hair research.
