TLDR LGR5 and LGR6 are expressed differently in various skin tumors, which may offer clues about their origins.
The study analyzed the expression of stem cell markers LGR5 and LGR6 in 152 skin tumor samples, including 94 basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), 18 trichoepitheliomas (TEs), and other basaloid tumors. LGR5 was highly expressed in BCCs, TEs, and basaloid follicular hamartomas (BFHs), while LGR6 showed a similar but lower expression pattern, with unique expression in stromal cells around TEs and exclusively in basaloid cells of pilomatricomas (PMCs). The study concluded that LGR5 and LGR6 have distinct expression patterns in basaloid skin tumors, which could provide insights into their origin and development. The research was supported by the Korea Health Technology R&D Project and had no conflicts of interest.
