TLDR Oral ciclosporin A and topical treatments both reduce hair loss and scaling in dogs with sebaceous adenitis, but using both together is most effective.
In a multicentre, partly double-blinded, randomized controlled study involving 34 dogs diagnosed with canine idiopathic sebaceous adenitis (ISA), the efficacy of oral ciclosporin A (CsA) was compared to conventional topical treatments over a period of 4-6 months. The study aimed to evaluate the treatments based on the primary endpoints of alopecia and scaling, as well as multiple histopathological secondary objectives. The results showed that both CsA and topical therapy were effective in reducing alopecia and scaling, with marginal differences between the treatment protocols. Topical treatment was more effective in reducing scaling than CsA alone, but a combination of both treatments provided a synergistic benefit for both scaling and alopecia and was most effective in reducing inflammation of the sebaceous glands. Additionally, CsA, whether used alone or with topical therapy, was suggested to be the best option for the regeneration of sebaceous glands.
