Sebaceous Adenitis in Swedish Dogs: A Retrospective Study of 104 Cases

Elisabeth Hernblad Tevell, Kerstin Bergvall, Agneta Egenvall
TLDR English springer spaniels are more prone to severe sebaceous adenitis than standard poodles.
The study on sebaceous adenitis (SA) in 104 Swedish dogs found that the disease was more prevalent in breeds like Standard Poodles, Akitas, and Springer Spaniels, with the latter showing more severe symptoms such as alopecia, seborrhea, and pyoderma. The mean age at diagnosis was 4.8 years, and 61% of the cases were male dogs. Treatment mainly involved topical care and oral fatty acids, which improved symptoms, but 14 dogs were euthanized due to severe SA, particularly within 24 months post-diagnosis. The study emphasized the need for early diagnosis, long-term management, and further research on the disease's inheritance, especially in Springer Spaniels.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.

Dutasteride may reduce scalp oil and itchiness more effectively than finasteride, with some users experiencing drier skin and improved hair thickness. Users report varying results, with some noticing benefits after switching from finasteride to dutasteride, while others use a combination of treatments including minoxidil.
