TLDR Cyclosporin effectively and safely treated skin diseases in three pets with no side effects.
The document reported on three animal cases of immune-mediated adnexal skin diseases treated with cyclosporin. A 3-year-old neutered male cat with granulomatous folliculitis and furunculosis, a 3-year-old neutered female Oriental cat with sebaceous adenitis, and a 4-year-old intact male pincher dog with alopecia areata all showed significant improvement or complete remission after receiving cyclosporin at a dosage of 5 mg/kg orally every 24 hours. The treatment was well-tolerated, with no side effects and normal blood cell counts and serum biochemical analysis. While cyclosporin was effective and safe, the authors noted a risk of systemic toxoplasmosis as a potential severe complication in cats. The findings suggest cyclosporin as a useful and safe alternative to traditional immunosuppressive therapies for treating selected immune-mediated diseases of the hair follicle and adnexa in cats and dogs.
