TLDR Over half of the dog skin disorders discussed have known gene variants, enabling genetic testing for diagnosis and responsible breeding.
This review article discusses the identified genes responsible for various congenital skin diseases in dogs, which are significant in the breeding of purebred dogs. The diseases covered include primary seborrhoea, ichthyosis, hereditary nasal parakeratosis, and several others, often linked to specific breeds. For over half of these conditions, specific defective gene variants have been identified. Genetic tests for these genes are crucial for diagnosing these diseases and aiding in the breeding process.
