TLDR Platelet-rich plasma therapy is more effective than minoxidil lotion for increasing hair count in men with hair loss, with mild side effects and high satisfaction.
The study conducted from October 2016 to October 2017 with 54 male patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) found that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy was more effective than topical 5% minoxidil lotion in increasing hair count per square centimeter after 12 weeks of treatment. PRP therapy led to a significant increase in hair density of 19.29% at 3 months and 9.19% at 6 months, with better responses observed in patients with less advanced alopecia (Hamilton-Norwood scale grade II-III). While 81.48% of patients in the PRP group experienced mild pain and erythema, the side effects were not severe enough to discontinue treatment, and high patient satisfaction was reported. Despite these positive results, the study noted the limitations of a small sample size and the absence of long-term follow-up data.
