Analysis of the Usage of Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Department of Cosmetology at a Tertiary Care Hospital
April 2017
TLDR Platelet-Rich Plasma treatment is effective for hair loss and chronic ulcers.
In 2017, a study was conducted at Stanley Medical College, Chennai, to evaluate the effectiveness of autologous Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy in treating androgenic alopecia and chronic ulcers. The study involved 42 androgenic alopecia and 4 chronic ulcer patients. The results showed that 59.52% of patients showed improvement. In male androgenic alopecia patients, 100% with Grade I, 80% with Grade II, 100% with Grade III, and 50% with Grade IV alopecia showed improvement after PRP treatment. All female androgenic alopecia patients with Grade II alopecia showed improvement. In chronic non-healing ulcer patients, there was a significant reduction in the 'area' and 'volume' of the chronic ulcer with mean improvement percentages of 77.05% and 91.97% respectively. The study concluded that autologous PRP treatment could be an affordable alternative therapy for androgenic alopecia and chronic non-healing ulcers in a developing country like India.
