Platelet-Rich Plasma in the Treatment of Androgenic Alopecia: A Follow-Up Study
February 2020
TLDR Platelet-rich plasma injections effectively treat hair loss in both men and women, increasing hair density with high patient satisfaction and no significant side effects.
The study conducted by Dr. Tauhida Rahman Ereen and colleagues in 2020 evaluated the effectiveness of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in treating Androgenic Alopecia in 60 patients over a six-month period. The patients' alopecia stage was assessed using the Hamilton-Norwood scale for men and the Ludwig scale for women. The patients received five PRP injections at weeks 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and were observed for 12 weeks (3 months) and 24 weeks (6 months). The results showed a significant increase in hair density, with mean hair counts of 35.46 ± 6.89, 43.68 ± 8.23, and 55.54 ± 11.11 per cm2 before PRP, after 3 months, and 6 months respectively (p < 0.005). Both digital and dermoscopic images showed improvement in patients, regardless of gender. The study concluded that PRP injections were effective in treating androgenetic alopecia in both males and females, with high patient satisfaction and no significant adverse effects.
