A Prospective Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Study to Assess the Efficacy of Platelet-Rich Plasma on the Treatment of Androgenetic Alopecia
January 2017
TLDR Platelet-rich plasma treatment significantly improved hair density and regrowth in both men and women suffering from pattern hair loss, with even better results when combined with certain medications.
The study conducted 6 years ago was a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, half-head study on male and female patients with Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA). It aimed to assess the efficacy of Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on AGA. The study was divided into two groups: Group A, which included patients without previous medication for AGA, and Group B, which included patients under medication for AGA (minoxidil or finasteride). All patients received 3 treatments of PRP on one half-head and saline solution on the other half-head, with a 1-month interval between each treatment. The results showed that in Group A, PRP alone significantly improved mean hair density, mean terminal hair density, mean anagen hairs, and telogen hairs at 6 months. In Group B, PRP combined with ongoing medication (either minoxidil or finasteride) effectively improved hair regrowth, with PRP and minoxidil showing greater improvement than PRP with finasteride. The study concluded that PRP had a positive effect on male and female pattern hair loss without major side-effects. However, the study had limitations regarding the sample size and duration of follow-up.
