TLDR Laminaria japonica and Cistanche tubulosa extracts combined may effectively promote hair growth.
The study from 2015 examined the hair growth-promoting effects of Laminaria japonica extract (LJE) and Cistanche tubulosa extract (CTE) on male C57BL/6 mice, comparing them to the effects of 3% Minoxidil. Over 21 days, the mice were treated with these substances, and the combination of LJE and CTE at specific doses (54 mg/kg LJE plus 162 mg/kg CTE) showed synergistic effects on hair regrowth, comparable to Minoxidil. This combination enhanced enzyme activities and growth factor levels associated with hair growth, such as ALP, y-GTP, EGF, and VEGF. Additionally, the extracts demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties by reducing inflammation in a mouse model. The study concluded that the oral treatment with LJE and CTE could be an effective approach to prevent hair loss and improve alopecia, potentially due to their anti-inflammatory activities.
