TLDR Using basic fibroblast growth factor with minoxidil improves hair growth and patient satisfaction more than using minoxidil alone.
The study "Clinical observation of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) combined with minoxidil in the treatment of male androgenetic alopecia" involved 80 male patients with androgenetic alopecia in Hamilton grade II–IV. They were divided into two groups of 40 each. Group A used 1 ml minoxidil externally twice a day, while Group B used 3500 IU basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and 1 ml minoxidil externally twice a day. After 3 and 6 months of treatment, the effective rate of both groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05), but Group B showed significantly improved hair conditions compared to Group A. After 6 months, Group B patients were more satisfied than those in Group A. No serious adverse reactions occurred in either group. The study concluded that the combination of bFGF and 5% minoxidil improved treatment efficiency and patient satisfaction compared to 5% minoxidil alone in treating early-stage male androgenetic alopecia.
