TLDR The study developed methods to measure biomarkers in mice and found differences in hormone levels linked to gut microbiota diversity and stress response.
The study evaluated LC-MS methods for measuring plasma renin activity (PRA) and aldosterone, crucial for diagnosing primary hyperaldosteronism and monitoring therapy. The PRA method showed linearity (0.7-193 nmol/L), sensitivity (LOQ = 0.7 nmol/L), precision (CV = 4.1%), and specificity, with acceptable dilutional linearity and recovery (84%). The aldosterone method also performed well. Reference ranges in 110 healthy subjects were established. The study concluded that their laboratory was among the first in the UK to implement these LC-MS methods routinely, demonstrating their effectiveness and highlighting potential issues with aldosterone cut-offs in suppression tests.
