TLDR DA liposomes with chloramphenicol effectively target hair follicles and combat MRSA with minimal skin toxicity.
The study evaluated the effectiveness of chloramphenicol (Cm)-loaded malleable liposomes, particularly those incorporating deoxycholic acid (DA), for targeting hair follicles and combating methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). DA liposomes significantly enhanced Cm uptake in hair follicles, demonstrated strong anti-MRSA activity comparable to free Cm, and showed good biocompatibility with keratinocytes and neutrophils. In vivo tests indicated negligible skin toxicity. The findings suggested that DA liposomes could be a promising approach for treating MRSA-infected skin conditions by effectively delivering antibiotics to hair follicles. Further preclinical studies were recommended to assess their in vivo effectiveness.
