TLDR Graying hair happens due to aging and might be delayed by new treatments.
Age-related hair pigment loss, or graying, served as a visible indicator of aging and was influenced by the hair growth cycle, which regulated follicular melanocytes. Research on mice suggested that melanocyte stem cell depletion contributed to graying, but caution was advised when applying these findings to humans. Both species likely experienced an age-related imbalance in oxidative stress management, affecting melanogenesis and melanocyte health. Emerging evidence indicated that the hair follicle pigmentary unit might have regenerative potential, suggesting possible strategies to prolong melanin production and delay graying.

community How far are we from a treatment better than finasteride?

in Treatment  129 upvotes 7 months ago
Dutasteride is more effective than finasteride for hair loss as it blocks more of the enzyme causing hair loss. New treatments like stem cell therapies and alternatives to minoxidil are being explored, but major advancements are still years away.

A man lost his transplanted hair despite using minoxidil because he wasn't on a DHT blocker like finasteride, which is essential to prevent further hair loss. The conversation emphasizes that hair transplants are not a cure and require maintenance with medications to preserve results.
