- Is saw palmetto as effective as finasteride against DHT? In the only head-to-head hair study, which was open-label, fewer men improved on saw palmetto (38%) than on finasteride (68%). That study did not measure DHT levels.
- Is it better to take saw palmetto in capsules or use it in lotions? The evidence does not show one form is better: the only head-to-head hair study of oral saw palmetto compared it with finasteride (and finasteride did better), the topical evidence is a single uncontrolled pilot, and there is no trial comparing capsules with lotions.
- Is saw palmetto good for androgenetic alopecia or only for mild hair loss? Evidence is weak and mostly in men with mild to moderate hair loss. In the one comparison study, fewer men improved on saw palmetto than on finasteride.
