    GlossaryCapsaicin

active compound in chili peppers causing heat sensation

Capsaicin is the active component in chili peppers that gives them their characteristic heat. It works by binding to pain receptors in the mouth and skin, which can cause a burning sensation. Interestingly, capsaicin is also used in topical creams to relieve pain by desensitizing sensory neurons, and some studies suggest it may promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp.
