TLDR 5AR inhibitors like finasteride and dutasteride improve hair growth and slow hair loss in male pattern baldness.
Male pattern hair loss (MPHL), affecting about 50% of both sexes, is linked to the enzyme 5-alpha reductase (5AR), which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, a key factor in hair loss. There are three isoenzymes of 5AR, with type 1 found in skin and hair follicles, and type 2 in male genitalia and hair follicles. Treatments include topical minoxidil and oral finasteride, a type 2 5AR inhibitor, which significantly improves hair growth and slows hair loss. Dutasteride, a dual inhibitor of type 1 and 2 5AR, has shown efficacy in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenetic alopecia, with a 2009 study in Korea demonstrating significant hair growth improvement. The lecture aimed to provide updates on 5AR inhibitors for better understanding and treatment of MPHL.
