TLDR Biologic agents are effective for severe hidradenitis suppurativa when other treatments fail.
The systematic review examines pharmacotherapy strategies for managing hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), emphasizing the efficacy of biologic agents like adalimumab, secukinumab, and bimekizumab in moderate to severe cases, particularly when conventional treatments fail. Antibiotics, such as clindamycin and tetracyclines, are commonly used but are limited by high relapse rates and potential resistance. Anti-androgen therapies, including spironolactone and finasteride, show benefits, especially in hormonally driven cases in women. The review highlights the need for individualized treatment plans and further research into HS's complex pathophysiology to develop more targeted therapies.
