TLDR Combining platelet-rich plasma with 5% minoxidil solution improves hair regrowth in androgenetic alopecia patients.
This study examined the effectiveness of combining platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with 5% minoxidil topical solution and 1 mg oral finasteride for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia (AGA). The study was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, half-head study with 24 participants. The results showed that the administration of PRP led to a statistically significant increase in mean hair count and mean hair density versus baseline values at 3 months and 6 months after the first treatment. The combination of PRP and minoxidil 5% solution showed superiority in mean hair count, hair density, anagen and telogen percentages, and mean anagen/telogen ratio in comparison with the association of PRP and finasteride 1 mg. The study suggests that the combination of 5% minoxidil topical solution with pure PRP might have a cumulative effect in DP cells and promote greater angiogenesis and improvement in hair regrowth of AGA patients.
